K–9 Curriculum Overview

Roots & Rivers™ provides a complete K–9 curriculum grounded in Indigenous Ways of Knowing and land-based learning. Each grade band includes lesson plans, teacher guides, assessment tools, and classroom-ready resources designed to support meaningful, culturally grounded learning.

Kindergarten
Invitations to early learning rooted in story, play, identity, and relationships with place.

Includes:

• Seasonal learning invitations
• Land-based storytelling activities
• Foundational literacy and numeracy through culture and community
• Teacher-guided reflection and family connections

Grades 1–3

Integrated thematic units that introduce students to land, animals, seasons, and community relationships.

Includes:

• Cross-curricular lessons (ELA, science, social studies)
• Land-based literacy and numeracy activities
• Cultural stories and knowledge frameworks

Grades 4–6

Intermediate modules focused on deeper inquiry, cultural perspectives, and land-based science.

• Land-based science, literacy, and social studies units
• Outdoor experiential learning
• Inquiry projects that connect to local community knowledge
• Teacher guides and culturally informed assessment tools

Grades 7–9

Community-focused modules that explore identity, belonging, and relational learning.

Includes:

• Inquiry-based projects connected to community and culture
• Land-based learning experiences that support wellness and leadership
• Cross-curricular connections for literacy, numeracy, and social responsibility
• Printable teacher guides and year-long planning tools

Assessment Tools

All curriculum materials include assessment tools aligned with provincial/territorial standards.
